TWENTY-SEVEN:

Ten minutes precisely, the door slid open to reveal Cim and the same female Fallon said was untrustworthy. Echo saw that her first impression of the female had not changed. She still looked like a sly mouse. She had obviously showered and eaten. Echo was surprised to see she had opted for a light green dress that fell to just below her knees, and a tan short-waisted jacket that matched her shoes.

Cim escorted her to a chair, then retreated from the room, but not before rolling his eyes. Which almost made Echo smile. It appeared he had enough of the female. The reports Echo had about her were numerous and not amusing. She had complained bitterly the entire time she had been onboard the Intercessor. Her cabin was too small. She was away from her friends. These so-called friends had requested to not be within speaking distant of the female. She complained that she could not use the comms or walk wherever she wanted without a guard. The complaints went on for several pages. Echo looked up from her tablet and said, ‘To make it more comfortable for you, we are going to be speaking English. Now can you confirm for our records, your name is Gail Denis and you are from Earth?’

‘Where is Fallon? Why can I not see her?’

Echo’s face tightened a fraction as she explained. ‘Please, just answer my question and this will go a lot faster.’

‘Is everyone being interviewed?’

Annoyed with her, Echo asked again, ‘Are you Gail Denis?’

Gail sighed heavily then sulkily muttered, ‘Yes.’

Echo smiled and said, ‘See that wasn’t so bad, was it?’ when she didn’t reply Echo asked Ziv, ‘Was she telling the truth?’

Ziv cheerfully stated, ‘No, she is lying.’

Echo grinned as the female jumped from her seat and screamed. ‘How dare you. I am not lying!’

Echo stated, ‘Sit down, and stop the histrionics. They do not become you and only serve to annoy me. Now, I know you are not Gail Denis.’

Retaking her seat when she did not receive the response she hoped for. She sat and pouted as a sly and calculating expression entered her eyes. ‘So, what if I’m not?’

Echo shrugged, ‘I already know who you are and why you are here.’

‘Is that so?’ she asked with a smirk and casually leaned back in the chair, ‘What is it you think you know?’

Echo’s tone was confident as she stated, ‘I know your birth name is Mila Rusu and you are thirty-nine yentas old. You were once an intelligence operative for the Zammit family working out of Europea and you left Earth of your own accord on the first ship available. You are fluent in several languages and by now you have to have picked up Coalition. You are also proficient in hand-to-hand combat, knife-work and the blaster. You seemed to have branched out Mila, working for someone like Stacy Cleland must be a letdown after your other employers.’

Mila was astounded by how much this woman knew about her. Since leaving Earth,
